America was founded on the basic principle that all “men” are created equal which, in itself, discriminates against women from the start. First, it is directed toward men only and second, we are not all equal as far as gender is concerned. This tension between man and woman’s rights became more obvious as time went on and finally, after much lobbying, women achieved their right to vote in the 20th century. Following this, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Equal Pay Act of 1963prohibits discrimination against women and others in employment gaining another accomplishment in the advancement of women in America. Sadly, though, women are still discriminated against in the workforce today and are confronted with obstacles that are both obvious and subtle. Becky Mulvaney, (1994) states “history demonstrates that legal personhood does not necessarily result in comparable/equal treatment. That is, women, like so many groups, have gained legal rights only to face less institutional, perhaps more subtle, but insidious forms of discrimination.” In other words, we made steps ahead by gaining these certain rights but, still have to endure underhanded, discriminatory practices because of being a woman. Inequality in pay, experience in a particular field ie. construction, law, medicine are areas that still raise a flag as far as equality is concerned.
