It’s widely known that crime literature is among the most popular forms of literature in existence. There a number of reasons to support the popularity of crime literature. It is the same reason that crime is popular in other forms of media, such as film and television shows. The primary reason for the popularity of crime is because readers get caught up in the suspense of crime. This can branch out to the exhilaration of the “chase” in catching a suspect, the belief that justice can and must prevail, and ultimately, the fascination and excitement of reading about something as interesting and out of the ordinary as crime.
The most transparent reason for why crime catches peoples’ interest is because as a culture we have become accustomed to the notion that justice must prevail in any circumstance. This is evident from the beginning of our history, when we established the belief that everybody is “innocent until proven guilty.” Although not directly tied into crime, we embellished the notion that crime suspects have to be given a fair trial and that the justice system would prevail in punishing them if they were ultimately guilty. This same concept is applied to crime literature. The excitement of seeing whether a suspect is caught is the driving force behind the “page-turner” style mystery novels.
