Fred Anderson writes about the French and Indian war in a narrative style with a neutral tone. Because Anderson has a neutral tone he does not really convey a specific mood in writing the accounts of battles and descriptions which took place during this war. In very few parts of the book Anderson emphasizes some detail in certain battles which grasps the attention of the reader a little more than other parts. He provided brief background information which readers would have otherwise never heard about in most historical accounts or history classes like when he describes general George Washington as a more “dashing figure than his men” even though he wasn’t any more knowledgeable in leading as a commander than his men because everything he had learned was from books and quizzes with his brother, who had once held the captain’s commission in the British army (45). It was interesting to see the different personalities of commanders involved , through Andersons description, but the lack of a solid bias or opinion makes his version of the account a little dull in some instances.
Fred Anderson’s version of the French and Indian war was a good overall summary that was not too long but provided much detail. I personally believe that his writing style made it somewhat difficult to follow because he switches topics and details of sites, names and dates constantly, making it easy to get confused and hard to keep up.
