Threw Your Mirror The body is a beautiful thing, but do you ever see a overweight or unattractive person on a billboard ad or as a runway model, or in a magazine or commercial or movie? No you see the skinny beautiful “Barbie” like women and the big muscular “Rambo” like man but is this what everyone looks like, the media is advertising a certain standard for what the ideal human body should look like by plastering this so called “unrealistic perfect body” everywhere. Many say the media and its depictions of the ideal body weight created the problems of low self-esteem, eating disorders, poor body concepts. If one were to look back in history and look at the artworks of Michelangelo or de Vinci, they would see in there artwork that women and men were "chunky," but there love handles, fat deposits and skin folds were attractive and were applauded, they were considered beautiful and they were painted and sculpted. Cleopatra, for example, was very beautiful , yet by modern standards she would be considered overweight. Marilyn Monroe was a very famous actress back in the 50’s and 60’s having very voluptuous curves and wearing a size 16 and she to would be considered overweight today even though the average American women wears a size 12-14. In Susan Bordos “Never Just Pictures”(1997) she talks about how the media called “Alicia Sliverstone “Fattgirl” and “Buttgirl” and then in her next movie she was a “babe”.” (paragraph 1) Alicia was not fat she was just bigger...
