I’ll never forget the day I met Betty Sue; she walked into my office and flashed me the fakest, halfway sewn together smile. I have seen it too many times before. I could tell, just by looking at her, that she is unhappy with life; she and every other person that walks into my office. So, I smiled my genuine smile to help her see the difference. In this scenario, as a psychologist, it was my turn to fully listen to why she came to see me for assistance. She obviously came for Existential therapy; “which focuses on the problems of existence, such as meaning, choice, and responsibility.” (515)
As she began her story, I began taking notes, and intently listening to my client Betty Sue. She began by referring to her hometown as “hell.” Well, number one, she was an unhappy kid growing up. She apparently, left her hometown due to unhappiness and in search for something more fulfilling in her eyes. She continued to tell me that she was in a serious relationship throughout high school and lost all of her really good friends. I couldn’t help but remember a grim moment of my life where my scenarios were a little like Betty Sue’s. She came to me to help her with the same thing I had to help myself with. I guess you could say, I have learned experience with this particular scenario. Betty Sue seems depressed. She began to tell me she didn’t really know what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.
