Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years’ War
    The Hundred Years’ war, is it possible that a war could actually last so long? According to historians, the Hundred Years’ War (1338-1453) was actually one hundred and fifteen years long, but I guess they call it what it is because it sounds better, and one hundred is a nice round number. What does Joan of Arc have to do with this war? Wasn’t she a woman? Yes, she was a woman, but she was a key leader in the war and she became a saint for dying for her Catholic faith.
    Saint Joan of Arc was born around 1412 in a small village in Dormer, which is near the eastern border of France. The facts on her childhood are a bit sketchy, but around the age of twelve she began to have visions of the former martyrs Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret and Saint Michael the Archangel. He was identified in the bible as the commander of Heaven’s armies in the war against Satan. During the Hundred Years’ War, St. Michael was the patron saint of the French Royal army. Anyway, these martyrs and Michael were telling her to go to church regularly and eventually told her to lead an army to fight against the English. (The Early Years)
