In the short story “Athletes and Education” written by Neil H. Petrie he is stating the variations of the role of intercollegiate athletics that he has seen throughout his time as a student and as a professor. As a student he recalls a time when the football coach, is in his mind, courting his English teacher in order to receive special treatment for his players. Then as a professor he gives an account of further special treatment within the academic system, such as excused absences, and the special consideration he is expected to give athletes in his classroom. He implies is only set about for the sports sake and not to the benefit of the student athlete. Also there is an account given of athletes who barely keep pace in their classes due to their strenuous academic and athletic schedules, however there are those who lack interest in academics altogether, hoping they have a future as a well-paid professional athlete. His overall intended message seems to imply that these schools only seem to want to use these kids to receive athletic glory for their respective institutions. When they are done, the students are sent out with virtually no formal education. This has left a strain on teachers whose student athletes do not want to succeed academically, but rather want to succeed in their respective sport.
