Song of Solomon

Song of Solomon" is a novel by Toni Morrison, the very famous and very popular Nobel laureate for literature. It's the story of a young black man named Milkman and his journey towards redemption and enlightenment from the twisted Michigan environment that spawned him. It's one of Morrison's most popular books, and won the Critics Circle award in 1978.

There's a controversy going on?
You betcha. During the summer of '97, the 11th grade Advanced Placement English class of David Flood, in the small town of Leonardtown, Maryland , was assigned to read "Song of Solomon." The book was then discussed briefly in class. Shortly after the class was finished with Song of Solomon, and happily whiling away the time on the extremely non-controversial "The Scarlet Letter," a mother of one of the students in the class, Mrs. Bernice Williamson, wrote in a letter to Dr. Edward Weiland. In the letter, Williamson demanded that the book be removed from the approved reading list.

Wow. Is Song of Solomon really all that bad?
It's got some rough parts, yes, but my personal opinion is that the examples she cites are a bit exaggerated. Still, those things are in there.
