HIV in Kenya
Around 6.3 percent of the 39 million population of Kenya live with HIV, which makes 2.4 million people. The HIV prevalence peaked with 13.4 percent during 2000 and in the last years it decreased to 6.3 percent. This decline was due to an increase in education and other measures like the increased use of condoms and the expanded HIV tests. In 1999, Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi declared the Aids a national disaster and announced that a National Aids Control Council would be established. Its principle aim was to reduce the number of new HIV infections by using different strategies against HIV. The main prevention strategies were increasing availability and access to counseling and testing, condoms and safe sex promotions, ensuring injection safety etc.
HIV tests
In 2000 there were only three voluntary counseling and testing sites nationwide and by 2007 about 1000. Besides the voluntary testing there is also provided initiated counseling and testing. Provided initiated counseling and testing is when individuals are offered a HIV test whenever they go to a health facility.
Condom use
Also the government has promoted condom use since 2001 and gave out hundreds millions of condoms. About 35 percent of the people who had a sexual intercourse in the last 12 months reported using a condom.
