Felipe Calderón, president of Mexico, has been mobilizing the Mexican military and law enforcement to perform counternarcotics operations throughout Mexico. These efforts have been generally targeted at areas near the US-Mexico border because of the activities of DTOs, drug trafficking organizations, in that area. The Mexican government has been able to disrupt trafficking organizations by detaining the leaders, however, the DTOs countered with increasing violence. This resulted in assassinations, kidnappings and other violent crimes affecting innocent civilians, causing President Obama to express concern about areas such as Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana. He has called for a continued monitoring of the situation in order to prevent any violence from making its way across US borders. Since Mexican drug organizations control a majority of the US drug market, the DEA has been coordinating with Mexican officials to combat the trafficking of drugs. Subsequently, evidence has shown that 87 percent of the firearms used in Mexican drug violence has originated from the US. Arms trafficking is not the only issue impeding US efforts. Corruption among the Mexican government at federal, state, and local levels, has delayed US efforts to form reliable partnerships with the Mexican government.
