After Criticism, the Administration Is Praised for Final Rules on Education Grants
Summary: It seems like three months after provoking an outpouring of criticism with preliminary plans for the nation’s largest competitive education grant program; the Obama administration has added flexibility in the final rules. The big race to the top grant will come to almost 4 billion dollars. After the rules were drafted up and published in July there were over a thousand comments that went to the Department of Education for the educators and many more people. States have until mid- January to get the application done and sent in. Also they have till June to get the second round of application in. One of the conditions for this is that they have to have statements of support written by other leaders of local districts. Along with the rules there is a scoring system that will be used by independent reviewers that were recruited by the department to judge the states. The final rules repeat the administration’s focus on charters as tools for school change. Opinion: I think that a race is a perfect way to find the states that deserve the money. If you can show that you can change the schools for the better then we know that the money would not be used on stupid things. I do believe that there is one flaw in this entire thing there are some states that can’t do it for different reasons like no time to fill out the paper work or the money to start changing things.
