“Dirk the Protector” by Gary Paulson is a wonderful story about a young boy and a faithful dog. The author stresses on the loyalty of the two friends, the young boy and the dog.
The story takes place in small town. The characters are walking along the dusty roads and dark, narrow alleys, deep into the night. Gary Paulson, the young boy, is a child living alone in a small place. He still goes to school during the morning and afternoon. At night, however, he works at a bowling alley which pays very little to the workers, who have to set up the pins for the people bowling. The boy could muster enough money to barely survive. Dirk is a shaggy dog who lingers in a dark, narrow alley. He has some scars from fighting others and is very skinny due to his lack of food. Gary Paulson gets off his work very late into the night and tries to find a way back home without having Happy, the leader of a group who liked to take Gary’s money he earned that day, hunt him down. Entering the dark alley, Gary meets a shabby, alert dog as it growled lowly at him as he moves through the alley. Though Gary tries to avoid Happy and his group, he still runs into Happy near the exit of the alley. Standing up for himself, Gary hits Happy, hoping to keep the money he earned that night away from Happy. Angrily, Happy and his group start beating him up. All of a sudden, the dog, which Gary encountered before, charges for Happy and his group, tearing and biting them. From then on, the dog, eventually nam...
