The role of leadership is crucial in any revolutionary or nationalist struggle and it can be argued that the leadership of Ho Chi Minh gave the Vietnamese a decisive advantage in the wars against the French and Americans (whose weaponry was highly developed and far superior). However, Ho Chi Minh’s leadership overcame this drawback because he gave to the people a common purpose; he inspired a determination and discipline that saw them endure extreme hardship to achieve their goals of unification and independence.
During his long travels overseas to places such as Europe, America and South Africa he developed a strong sense of morality and justice; he saw the freedoms that the French, to his people can be seen when he unsuccessfully petitioned the US President Woodrow Wilson at Versailles in 1919 calling for democratic reform in Indochina and ultimate independence. His revolutionist writings were smuggled back into Vietnam secretly and were read by the Vietnamese middles class which, according to Tran Van Giau (veteran Vietnamese communist) ‘opened a new world to us’. He was always determined to fight for his people and never showed any ulterior motive for his drive to shape Vietnamese history. According to Karnow, his time in Moscow transformed him from a propagandist to a practical organiser. From Russia travelled to China, where he promoted his communist vision for Vietnam.
