Males and females have more in common with their sexual response cycle than people they may really know. The sexual response cycle is what describes the changes that occur in the male and female body when it is sexually arouse (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). There are four phases of the sexual response cycle. They are excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution (Nevid & Rathus, 2005).
The first phase known as the excitement phase is typically the stage when a male experiences an erection. During this stage a female experiences vaginal lubrication, myotonia or muscle tension (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). The heart rate also increases in both males and females during this stage. The second phase of the sexual response cycle is known as the plateau phase. During this phase sexual arousal stay fairly stable. Males experience an increase in the circumference of the head of the penis and the testes are elevated into the position for ejaculation (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). During this phase females experience swelling in the outer part of the vagina while contracting the vaginal opening to prepare for grasping of the penis (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). The inner part of the vagina expands and the clitoris withdraws beneath the clitoral hood and tends to shorten. The third phase is known as the orgasmic phase.
