Professor English 200 13 November 2009 Several of William Shakespeare’s plays have been turned into films over the years. Some directors and writers try to capture the true spirit of Shakespeare’s words and portray the meanings and intentions of his words as they were meant to be read. Other, try to put a twist on the plays by changing the setting, or modernizing the script. Michael Hoffman, however, does an excellent job of combining the two; modernizing a brilliant play while keeping it authentic. In his 1999 film version of this popular play, Hoffman modernizes the play by placing the characters in a (more) modern day and age, in a beautiful Tuscany village, while maintaining the original words of the writer. For instance, the introduction of bicycles as a mode of transportation for our characters is a wonderful addition that helps develop the play in a more modern sense, but does not take away from the beauty of Shakespeare’s words. Additionally, the all-star cast contributes vastly to the film with their excellent interpretation of the words. Kevin Kline, in particular, does phenomenally well with his version of the character Bottom. The film is well thought out, well casted, and well executed. It helps audiences to enjoy Shakespeare’s words by bringing the pages to life.
