Poetry Analysis of T.S Elliot

The Hollow Men
The Epigraphs
There are two epigraphs in the beginning of this poem. One of the Epigraphs comes from Joseph’s Conrad’s novel The Heart of Darkness and the other is from an old folk song. The epigraph from The Heart of Darkness can connect with many ideas and images in “The Hollow Men” itself. The line “Mistah Kurtz--- head dead.” shows a person's recognition of death and also hints at the over arching goal of the free verse poem, which is to make language new. The epigraph concerning the folk song connects with the later occurrence of the mocking of the children’s song seen in Part V.
Part I
In the first section of T.S. Elliot’s poem The Hollow Men the use of oxymoron, repetition, and caesural pauses brings to life the hollow men of the poem. The first section is framed by repetitious lines that are explained within the lines in between the two frames. Elliot’s use of caesural pauses and repetition create a pattern within the free verse poem giving it rhythm and voice. Also, the use of enjambment, assonance, and near rhyme add to the pattern of the free verse poem and connect its phrases and passages in with one another. The motif of dry imagery is one that gives the poem the sense that something is lacking or that something is needed. The oxymoron and juxtaposition of images that do not typically go together present disjointedness to the reader. The hollow men and the stuffed men are both empty men and lacking.
