The Joker / Jack Napier are played by Jack Nicholson. Jack Napier is a corrupt cop who is set up by the crime boss of Gotham City for having an affair with his mistress.

Commissioner Gordon is played by Pat Hingle

Vicki Vale is played by Kim Basinger. She is a reporter for the local paper who later is the girlfriend of Bruce Wayne

Alexander Knox is a reporter played by Robert Wuhl who works with and likes Vicki Vale.

Harvey Dent is a District Attorney played by Billy Dee Williams

Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s butler played by Michael Gough

Carl Grissom is the crime boss of Gotham City played by Jack Palance

Plot Setting:

The movie is set in Gotham City. As a child Bruce Wayne is coming from a play with his parents. While they are in an alley they are attack and murder, while Bruce witnesses their murder. Bruce then vows to avenge their murder and assumes the alter ego of Batman.

Exposition:

The exposition of the movie is when Batman arrives to arrest Napier and during the fight Napier falls from a platform, despite the attempt of Batman trying to rescue him, Napier falls into a vat of chemicals. The chemicals disfigure Napier and after an attempt at plastic surgery, Napier is left with a permanent grin similar to the Joker on a playing card.
