As a student in secondary science teacher certification program here at University of Houston, I believe learning to be an effective science teacher requires one to first have effective classroom management in place and second to decide how one will proceed about teaching the material to the students in the class. The two articles that I have read underline the importance and challenges one faces in achieving these two goals.
My first article addresses competency six. It informs the reader about the appropriate rules for a science classroom and how to get students to abide by those rules in order to foster a safe and productive learning environment. The article stresses that science teachers should have two types of rules: one for the general classroom addressing behavioral expectation and other specifically designed for safety in the laboratory. The textbook supports this notion and states that “Successful learning depends on the development of an environment where students easily transition, understand routines, and know their responsibilities and their teachers’ expectations” (Nath & Cohen, 2005).
    I believe there should be no compromise on safety. From my experience, school-districts in Texas usually have safety contract in place that they require the parents to sign in order to allow the student to participate in lab activities. I think a teacher should provide a logical reason to the students for why these safety rules exist so that they understand its significance....
